I agree with ajgibb, take I80west to I39 north. I39 north takes you to Rockford and into Wisconsin and is lightly traveled. Avoid it!Ī toll-free option, a bit longer, is to stay on I80 (toward Iowa) and go west to I39. It is a madhouse through some of the toughest of Chicago real estate. You do not want to take I94 through Chicago whatever you do!!! What I'm saying is I294 and I90 are both toll roads, busy at rush hours, but not particularly challenging. It is no big deal-just take your time, slow down soon enough, don't hit the booth with your mirrors and you will do fine. (Shortly north of Rockford you are into toll-free Wisconsin.) The toll booths are no problem-just be in the right hand lanes and have some cash ready. I90, which is the interstate from I294 to Rockford is also a toll road. I have traveled from I65 to I90 around the bottom of Lake Michigan- I80 to I294 to I90- in a 36 ft Class A with a Suburban toad many times. I went thru the truck lanes when possible or whereever a sign directed me. North of the city charged per wheel (approx 2x car rate.) South of the city per axle, paid car rates. I'm sure others on this forum can give you more up-to-date suggestions. Link, you can buy and I-Pass, but I wouldn't bother with it for one trip up and back. It's been a few years since I've driven I-294 (the toll road), and in that time they've converted to a tag system (called "I-Pass"). Going west on I80, take the I94 branch heading north and this will take you through Chicago and off to the north without using I-294 which is the toll road loop around the west side of Chicago.īoth routes are real busy, so try and avoid making this transit during rush hour.
