I agree with ajgibb, take I80west to I39 north. I39 north takes you to Rockford and into Wisconsin and is lightly traveled. Avoid it!Ī toll-free option, a bit longer, is to stay on I80 (toward Iowa) and go west to I39. It is a madhouse through some of the toughest of Chicago real estate. You do not want to take I94 through Chicago whatever you do!!! What I'm saying is I294 and I90 are both toll roads, busy at rush hours, but not particularly challenging. It is no big deal-just take your time, slow down soon enough, don't hit the booth with your mirrors and you will do fine. (Shortly north of Rockford you are into toll-free Wisconsin.) The toll booths are no problem-just be in the right hand lanes and have some cash ready. I90, which is the interstate from I294 to Rockford is also a toll road. I have traveled from I65 to I90 around the bottom of Lake Michigan- I80 to I294 to I90- in a 36 ft Class A with a Suburban toad many times.
